The Scholars in Residence (SIR) program is designed to nurture members and visitors in their faith through the inspiration and instruction of recognized guest scholars, musicians and artists. These guests would share his or her expertise through forums, workshops and worship experiences.

You are invited to participate in this exciting ministry at SAKLC, designed to offer our congregation and community outstanding presentations on significant issues / topics related to our faith. During the months of January, February and March, we have the privilege of hosting well-known, highly respected Church Leaders, each of whom has used his talents to contribute mightily to the Church of Jesus Christ.

Envisioned as an annual experience, this program made its debut in 2002. Those sharing with us in 2008 include the following:

SCHOLARS IN RESIDENCE

The Rekos

Ruth and Karl have lived in the Chicago area for nearly 20 years. Ruth grew up in Texas while Karl is an Illinois native. Presently serving as the Director of the Department for Social Ministry Organizations of the ELCA. Her extensive Social Ministry experience with the National Church was preceded by her work in health care services, hospice, early childhood education, adoption services and the overseas mission field. A graduate of Valparaiso University, Ruth holds a Master of Social Work degree from Washington University, St. Louis and doctorates from the Union Institute Graduate School, Cincinnati, OH and Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville, IL.

Karl, with Ruth, began his ministry as a missionary / teacher for five years at St. Timothy Seminary in Papau, New Guinea. He also served on the staff at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis and at Christ Seminary-Seminex. Before he retired in 2003, Karl served the ELCA as Director of International Scholarships, Division for Global Mission. He has also been an interim pastor in several congregations. The Rekos have two sons.
